“You are full of love. You love with all your soul. It’s brighter than the fire… blinding.” – First Slayer to Buffy (season 5)I always particularly liked the fire metaphor when it comes to Buffy and love. The way the first slayer chose to word it by saying that her love was “brighter than the fire“. When Buffy said she wanted “the fire back” in Once More, With Feeling. Spike who describes great love as something that “burns and consumes” in Seeing Red. And of course, the final scene in Chosen, in which Buffy metaphorically got the fire back, when she opens herself to (romantic) love again. I thought it was a beautiful theme regarding their relationship, so here’s a banner about it :)

Hi everybody! First of all, sorry I’m a little late, I made some icons for this round. As we all noticed, after photobucket decided to block the links on third-party sites, every corner of the fandom was affected so I was not the exception. I’m changing the links ohlord but obviously it’s affected all. You know, I’m sad for everything we lost, it’s a catastrophe of multiple proportions. This story is set during the summer between seasons 5 and 6. It refers briefly to both School Hard and Lovers Walk, but sets them in the retconned universe where Dawn was born into the Summers family.”

The cigarette flared against the night sky.
“Your turn,” Dawn prompted, propping her elbow on her pillow.
Perched on the windowsill, Spike blew smoke into the night. “First time you nicked something.”
Dawn giggled quietly. “In L.A. Mom was always at Buffy’s psychiatrist’s, and I missed my dance class. We went to Walmart to get school supplies. I stuffed a New Kids on the Block CD under my shirt.”
“Got caught, did you?”
“So grounded.” His low chuckle encouraged her. “My turn. First time you smoked a cigarette.”
“At school. Bloke from the upper form dared me. I got sick. Spent the night in infirmary.”
Dawn muffled a laugh. “Did you get teased?”
“Already the butt of the class, wasn’t I? After Dru turned me, I hunted down the older students and–” he broke off, covering the pause with another drag. “Thought you were going to sleep.”
“I’m not tired yet. Your turn.”
“First time you knew Buffy was the Slayer.”
Dawn’s smile faded. “Mom thought Buffy was having delusions, but she had really changed. She was freaky strong. I caught her lifting her bed to look for a shoe.
“One night, I was taking out the garbage and this guy grabbed me. His face was so weird. It was like a nightmare. And then Buffy was there, and she stabbed him, and he dissolved. She made me promise not to tell.”
He sat smoking. Dawn wondered how many times he had been the monster in the night.
“First time you knew you were in love with Buffy.”
He was quiet so long she wondered if he was going to answer. “Caught sight of her in the Bronze. She shone like the sun.”
“Yeah, but then you wanted to kill her. When did you know?”
“You were there, Bit. We were drinking cocoa in the kitchen. Angel burst open the door. Your mum pushed you behind her and stood with her bitty bottle of holy water like she was going to hold back the forces of hell with a garden hose.” Dawn could hear his smile. “I was so busy twitting Angel I didn’t hear your sis. She had me pinned to the counter before I knew what’s what.”
“You are such a masochist. You love it when women beat you up,” Dawn teased.
“Vampire. Evil.” He lit a new cigarette from the end of the first.
The front door opened and closed quietly. Willow’s voice and the Buffybot’s filtered up the stairs.
“That’s Wills home from patrol.” Spike pinched out his smoke and swung his leg over the sill. Dawn knew he wouldn’t stay, not with the bot in the house like a lingering spirit of their dead.
“Spike,” she called softly. He paused.
“We made it through one more day.” Let him be back tomorrow.
“Hundred forty-six.” He was outlined briefly in the moonlight, and then he was gone.

Hi everyone, I’m so happy to be here again, thanks so much for another round. Today is my day and I made some random spuffy icons, well, it’s still extremely addictive. I hope you like them! :)

It’s my posting day, yay!
I was quite shocked when I saw garnigal ‘s entry (as much as there was still room for more shock, given her posting date), and even more so when I saw how really amazing it is. (If you haven’t read it, I strongly recommend you go do it!) But my awesome cheer-me-on beta thenewbuzwuzz told me (unasked, I might add :) thank you for that, honey!) I shouldn’t worry, it was different enough from mine, so I stopped thinking about throwing it away and go into hiding on my posting day.
Mine lacks the total awesomeness that is garnigal’s almost poetic piece and is intstead more of a run-of-the-mill fic, but hey, I offer more words, that’s something, right?
A huge thanks to my two betas! While Thenewbuzwuzz was my first impression voice on the raw draft, encouraged me and pointed out some ‘huh?’-moments, my amzing long-time beta (well, it is more than a year now, is it?) seapealsh took care of all those preposition errors, the weird cases of ‘-ing’ or not to ‘-ing’, and generally all those things that happen when a non-native speaker butchers your wonderful language. I’d be lost without her. Thank you both so much!!!

Happy Seasonal Spuffy everyone! Sorry for my lack of comments so far; I’ve been needing the litle fannish time I’ve had to finish my own contribution. Unsurprisingly, it’s icons: a set showing various Spuffy interactions “under the influence”. (I could think of a few more, but these are all I had time for.) Also, apologies for not posting before twelve in my time zone. But if I’d done that, my contribution would have been about half as small…

Explanations & excuses: The poems are NOT set during the episodes that the words are from. I’ve included text versions and two kinds of clickable image versions, so if you want you can try and read the classic blackout way, or look at where the words came from. I ignore capitalization for the text versions, and I messed with the unused parts of the text a little so that the images wouldn’t be too huge.

A/N: WARNING: There is mention of the fearsome foursome (Angelus, Darla, Drusilla, and Spike) as well as references to what they got up to. It’s relatively vague, and I don’t think it would be triggery (far less graphic than the mentions of what they did in the series), but YMMV. If you’re concerned, it’s in Part III, and you can scroll right past if you need to.
Written for the 2016 spring Seasonal Spuffy challenge, A New Era, with a hat-tip to garnigal for the title. For those of you who don’t know, kintsugi is the Japanese art of golden repair: repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. As a philosophy it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, and not something to disguise. For the purposes of this fic, the prior story ended somewhere in the vicinity of “Smashed/Wrecked” and this one picks up right after that one.
Note: If I haven’t already nattered on enough, I am throwing canon out the window here. This is a smaller story than I had intended, but real life got in the way, and it’s not quite as long as I wanted it to be. I hope you all enjoy it anyway. It’s posted on AO3 due to RL getting in the way.
