Where’s the Doctor – Chapter 1

This entry is part 1 of 12 in the series Where's the Doctor

Thanks to enigmaticblues  for continuing this comm. I haven’t had a chance to dip into the stories and other posts yet, but I’ve been enjoying the push my deadline has given me to jump back into my fandom. I’m hoping to spend a lot of time here this winter.

Title: Where’s the Doctor?
Rating: PG at most
Pairing: Spike/Buffy

Summary: Some time ago, I wrote a short fic called Who’s the Doctor?. It was an AU version of “As You Were” that involved some characters from the recent seasons of Doctor Who. I’m having problems categorizing the current fic, because it’s a prequel from the Doctor’s point of view and a sequel from Buffy and Spike’s. As far as BTVS is concerned, it’s during or after an AU Season 6 where Spuffy is a happy reality and all the characters get along, more or less. In the Whoverse, it takes place during Tom Baker’s reign, when he was traveling with Leela.

I hope it’s okay that this is a crossover. If you’re not a Doctor Who fan, you don’t need to know anything more than that the Doctor travels in time and space in a machine called a TARDIS. It’s supposed to blend in with its surroundings, but has gotten stuck in the form of a 1950s era British police box, which looks a bit like a phone booth. Also, he gets lost a lot.

I haven’t quite finished the story, but I’m sure I can get it done before my day is over. I’ve never yet missed seasonal_spuffy a deadline. I don’t know if I work well under pressure, but at least pressure makes me work. Once I clean up the chapters that are still sketchy, it should be about 5,000 words long.

For those unfamiliar with classic Who, I’ve provided a pic of the fourth regeneration of the time lord with his then-companion Leela. For those already familiar with Leela, well, I can’t imagine you’ll mind looking at her.

Chapter 1

The strange noise that the TARDIS made when traveling faded, but the Doctor didn’t raise his eyes from the console. He kept muttering things like, “that’s odd,” and “I wonder…”

Leela had traveled with him long enough to know what this meant. “We are lost again,” she announced.

“No!” He responded with a low roar that would have seemed threatening if every sound he made didn’t have a strange undercurrent of humor in it.

Besides, Leela did not threaten easily. “Whenever this machine jerks while we are traveling and you look confused, you don’t know where we are.”

“Well, yes, but that’s not to say we’re lost, precisely.” He bent his head again, so that she was looking at his mop of curls instead of his face.

“You have explained this several times, but I still don’t understand the difference.”

He stepped around the console, still poking at it. “Well, for one thing, we appear to be on Earth. You can’t call that lost. The planet’s practically a second home to me.”

“But not to me.” Before Leela could continue the argument she was distracted by the sound of something banging loudly on the TARDIS door. She exchanged glances with the Doctor.

“Well, that hardly ever happens.” He stood upright and moved toward the door, his long scarf swaying down to his ankles and trailing across the floor as he contemplated the meaning of the sound. “I wonder what that’s about?”

The knocking became even louder and more insistent. It seemed to Leela that the most likely cause was someone requesting entrance, but she she knew that saying so would only start another argument. Determined to resolve the question herself, she moved toward the noise. Keeping one hand on the hilt of her knife, she opened the door a crack.

It was dark outside, but she made out the figure of a slender man standing in a grassy area covered with some sort of small monuments. As he leaned into the light leaking from the TARDIS, she saw that his eyes were an astonishing shade of blue and his hair an even more astonishing shade, yellow that was nearly white. His hands were on his hips and his lips were set in a pout, but Leela knew a hunter when she saw one, and she drew her knife. “What do you want?”

Not the least intimidated by her blade, he snarled, “Where’s the Doctor?”
